Polk JVs rally at foul line to upend Owen

Keyan Simpson hit six free throws down the stretch and Carlos Oliviera sealed the victory with a free throw in the final seconds as Polk County defeated Owen 30-28 in Tuesday’s Western Highlands Conference junior varsity boys basketball game.

Trailing 26-23, Simpson hit two free throws with 1:54 remaining to start Polk County’s comeback. After forcing a turnover, Simpson added two more at the 1:40 mark and one each at the 46-second and 31.8-second marks to give the Wolverines a 29-26 lead.

Owen scored with 16.9 seconds left to make it 29-28. Polk County missed two free throws, and Owen missed a shot in the final seconds. With two seconds remaining, Oliviera made a free throw to extend the lead to 30-28. Owen turned the ball over on the inbounds pass, and Polk County ran out the clock.

Brennan Oates led Polk County (3-11) with 10 points. Simpson added eight, Oliviera scored six, RJ Simpson finished with four and Dre Thompson had two.

Owen fell to 7-7.

Polk County travels to Brevard on Wednesday for a non-conference game.
