Wolverines rout Mountain Heritage to clinch conference title

Polk County clinched its first Western Highlands Conference softball title since 2012 on Friday, downing Mountain Heritage 9-0 in a conference game at Polk.

With the win, the Wolverines (15-1, 10-0) own a two-game lead over Madison with two games remaining, but have already swept the Patriots this season.

Ashley Scruggs struck out nine in earning her third shutout of the week. Scruggs also had two hits.

“She has had quite a run,” said Polk County head coach Jeff Wilson.

Maranda Gosnell and Maddy Foy each had three hits, with Kassidy Reynolds, Ashley Kropp and Alexis McCraw each adding two hits. Polk built a 5-0 lead after two innings, then added two runs in the third and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

“The bottom of our lineup, our seven, eight, nine hitters, had seven hits,” Wilson said.

Polk County heads to Cherokee on Monday for a non-conference game with Hiwassee Dam.
