Wolverines pound East Rutherford in playoff opener

Polk County opened state 2A playoff action Tuesday in impressive fashion, going on the road and handing East Rutherford a 14-1, five-inning setback in a first-round game in Forest City.

The Wolverines (14-8) built a 11-0 lead after three innings in eliminating the Cavaliers (16-8). With the win, Polk County advances to second-round play and will face Western Highlands Conference rival Madison, who defeated Surry Central 11-4 on Tuesday. That game will be played Friday at 6 p.m. in Marshall.

Autumn Owen led Polk County’s 13-hit attack, going 3-for-3 with six RBI. Hayley Kropp finished 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI, with Maranda Gosnell also going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Haley Fowler finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Morgan Stott added a 2-for-2 day.
