Polk County erupted for five runs in the third inning Friday and held on to defeat Madison 6-5 in a key Western Highlands Conference game in Marshall.
With the win, the Wolverines (12-1, 7-0) completed a season sweep of the Patriots (8-3, 6-2), the defending league champions. Polk County now has a two-game lead over Madison and Owen in the WHC race.
Hayley Kropp and Maranda Gosnell each homered in the game, with Kropp’s two-run blast highlighting the big third inning. Madison rallied from the 5-1 deficit to make it 5-4, but the Wolverines scored once in the seventh and held Madison to a lone run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.

Gosnell and Ashley Kropp each had two hits for Polk County, with Maddy Foy adding a hit and walk and two key RBI. Ashley Scruggs earned the win, her 12th of the season.
Polk County is back in action on Monday, hosting Avery at 4 p.m.
