Polk County tuned up Wednesday for its pending conference showdown with Madison, cruising to a 15-0 four-inning win over Asheville Trailblazers in non-conference softball play at Polk County.

The win on a rainy afternoon improved Polk’s record to 3-0 heading into Friday’s scheduled Western Highlands Conference meeting with Madison, ranked third in the state in the preseason North Carolina Softball Coaches Association 2A poll. That game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m., weather permitting.

The Wolverines rapped out 11 hits on Wednesday, with Kassidy Reynolds going 2-for-2 and Autumn Owen and Hayley Kropp each adding two hits. Kinsley Jackson and Caitlin Britton added doubles and Karli Wood and Ashley Kropp each had singles, with Kropp drawing three walks.

“We had a good mix offensively,” said Polk County head coach Jeff Wilson. “We had some new faces step up and hit the ball well.”

The Wolverines led 3-0 after two innings, then exploded for nine runs in the third before scoring three more runs in the fourth to end the game early by run rule.

Ashley Scruggs allowed just two hits and struck out four in four innings to pick up the win.
