Shope leads Hiwassee Dam past visiting Wolverines

Kennesaw State signee Haylie Shope held Polk County to one run Monday as Hiwassee Dam notched a 6-1 win over the Wolverines in a non-conference softball battle played in Cherokee.

Polk County (15-2) managed six hits off Shope, but could only score once, that in the top of the first inning. Hiwassee (12-2), ranked eighth in the latest 1A state coaches poll, answered with five runs in the bottom of the first, then scored once in the second before managing just one hit in the final four innings.

Maranda Gosnell was 2-for-3 to lead the Wolverines, with Autumn Owen, Kassidy Reynolds, Haley Fowler and Ashley Kropp each adding a hit.

Polk County is scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to face the Asheville Trailblazers in another non-conference game.
