Scruggs hurts Owen with arm, bat in five-inning Polk County victory

Ashley Scruggs held Owen to one hit Friday and drove in five runs to lead Polk County to a 14-1 five-inning win over Owen in Western Highlands Conference softball action in Swannanoa.

The Wolverines (15-4, 8-3) pounded out 15 hits in winning their fifth consecutive game.

Scruggs finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with a two-run single in the second and a two-run double in a fifth inning in which Polk County scored six runs. On the mound, she struck out five, with one walk.

The hitting standouts were many for Polk County. Brittany Jones had three hits. Brandi Cordell had two hits and three RBI. Hayley Kropp and Alexis McCraw each had two hits with an RBI.

“We have a three-pronged attack – pitching, we make routine plays and we have quality at-bats,” said Polk County head coach Jeff Wilson. “I know I sound like a broken record, but that’s how we approach every game.”

Polk County hosts Swain County on Monday, then travels to Hendersonville on Tuesday to wrap up its conference schedule.
