Scruggs earns Times-News player of year; softball standouts honored at banquet

Polk County freshman pitcher Ashley Scruggs has been named the Times-News Softball Player of the Year.

Scruggs finished the second with a 20-5 record, striking out 172 batters while posting a 1.37 earned run average with 10 shutouts. She also batted .333.

Teammates Ashley and Hayley Kropp were named to the softball all-area team. Ashley Kropp hit .405 with 20 RBI while Hayley Kropp hit a team-leading .500 with four homers and set school records for hits (44) and hitting streak (17 games).

Polk County’s softball team also recognized a number of players at its season-ending awards banquet, held recently in the school cafeteria. Players receiving awards there included:

MVP: Brittany Jones and Hayley Kropp

Best Offense: Ashley Kropp

Best Defense: Alexis McCraw

Miss Wolverine Award: Ashley Scruggs

Most Improved: Kinsley Jackson

Coaches Award: Maddy Foy

MVP: Katelyn Allison and Caitlin Britton

Coaches Award: Taylor Plumley

Wolverine Award: Ashley Ponder
