Eleven proved a lucky number Wednesday for Polk County’s softball team, the Wolverines scoring 11 runs in both games of a doubleheader to sweep the Asheville Trailblazers in non-conference softball action in Asheville.

Polk County took wins of 11-1 and 11-3, upping its record to 17-2 ahead of Friday’s conference game at home against Owen.

In the day’s first game, the Wolverines took control of the game with a five-run second inning, that rally keyed by Ashley Scruggs’ three-run double. Scruggs also earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing four hits with three strikeouts before Haley Fowler took over in the fifth and closed the game.

Ashley Kropp finished 3-for-3 and Alexis McCraw and Maranda Gosnell were each 2-for-3 for Polk.

In the nightcap, the Wolverines built a 7-2 lead after two innings and went on to take the win. Scruggs pitched five innings, allowing four hits and striking out five, before Fowler again came on in relief.

Scruggs finished 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Wolverine offense, which also got two hits from Autumn Owen and Fowler and home runs from Hayley Kropp and Karli Wood. Caitlin Britton also singled in her lone plate appearance.

“I was really impressed with our hitting,” said Polk County head coach Jeff Wilson. “We had a lot of very good hitting throughout our lineup. Scruggs and Fowler both pitched really well.”
