A pair of entertaining high school playoff games are in store for local fans Saturday as Polk County hosts second-round softball and girls soccer 2A playoff games.
The action begins at 3 p.m. as the Wolverine softball squad (20-3) hosts Brevard (19-4). The Blue Devils have been considered one of the top teams in Western North Carolina throughout the season and are led by sophomore pitcher Casey Gilbert. Gilbert enters the game with a 17-4 record, her earned-run average at 1.69 with 160 strikeouts in 132.3 innings of work.
Freshman Brooke Nanney, senior Mackensie McNiel and junior Callie Green lead the Brevard offense.

The focus will then shift Saturday evening to Wolverine Stadium, where Polk County will host defending state 2A girls soccer champion West Stokes.
The Wildcats (18-5-2) returned just goalkeeper Liz Nail and four defenders from last year’s championship squad, but found an offensive dynamo in freshman Zoe Wehr, who finished the regular season with 28 goals and 12 assists.
Polk County enters with a 14-4 record.
