The trip to Burnsville proved to be a heartbreaking one Friday for Polk County’s baseball and softball squads, each falling in the bottom of the seventh.
Mountain Heritage rallied from a 9-2 deficit to take a 10-9 win in the Western Highlands Conference softball matchup. The Cougars pounded out 20 hits to win a wild affair in which the Wolverines had 14 hits.
Ashley Scruggs was 4-for-4 with three RBI, Ashley Kropp had three hits and Katelyn Allison and Brittany Jones each had two hits for Polk County, which led 9-4 before Mountain Heritage scored five runs in the sixth to the tie the game.

Polk County drops to 10-4 overall, 4-3 in the WHC, with Mountain Heritage now moving into second place in the league race.
Mountain Heritage took a 14-4 win in junior varsity play.
The Polk County baseball squad rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game, but Mountain Heritage pushed across the winning run in the seventh for a 4-3 victory.
Tyler Campbell had three hits, Dequan Gary had two and Damian Cantrell cracked a solo home run for the Wolverines. Mountain Heritage (5-8, 4-4) grabbed its 3-0 lead in the first on Colton Garland’s bases-loaded triple.
The Wolverines dropped to 5-11, 3-5 with their sixth straight setback.
Both teams are back in action April 22, traveling to Avery.
