Pisgah snaps Polk County’s winning streak, takes 5-1 victory

Pisgah held Polk County to three hits Thursday as the Bears took a 5-1 win over the sixth-ranked Wolverines in Canton.

Starter Madison Whited struck out six in four innings as Pisgah (6-3), traditionally one of the top teams in Western North Carolina, handed Polk County (7-2) its second loss of the season and snapped the Wolverines’ five-game winning streak.

Hayley Kropp, Maranda Gosnell and Ashley Scruggs had Polk County’s hits, with the Wolverines scoring their only run in the top of the seventh.

Scruggs allowed just four hits and struck out four in the game.

Polk County continues its tough non-conference schedule on Monday, facing Union County, defending 3A state champions in South Carolina, at USC Upstate at 5 p.m. Union is 6-0 entering Friday’s game with Lancaster.
