PCHS roundup: Wolverines enjoy winning night at Mitchell

Wes Brady homered and earned the win on the mound Friday in leading Polk County to an 8-5 win over Mitchell in Western Highlands Conference action in Ledger.

Brady helped fuel a late Polk surge as the Wolverines turned a narrow 3-2 lead entering the seventh into an 8-2 bulge, scoring five in the frame. Mitchell scored three in the bottom of the seventh.

Brady scattered four hits in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win.

Polk County (7-12, 5-5) remains two games behind Owen and Madison in the race for a WHC playoff berth. The Wolverines travel to Chase on Wednesday for a non-conference game.

SOFTBALL

Ashley Scruggs pitched a two-hitter and drove in five runs Friday to lead Polk County to an 8-0 win over Mitchell in Western Highlands Conference softball action in Ledger.

Scruggs had three hits as Polk (13-4, 6-3) built a 5-0 lead after four innings.

Kassidy Reynolds added three hits and Brittany Jones had two for the Wolverines, who had 11 hits in the game.

Scruggs struck out eight in the shutout.

Polk County returns home Monday for a key WHC matchup with Mountain Heritage. The Wolverines currently trail the Cougars by a game and a half for second place in the WHC standings.
