Owen sweeps Polk County in Swannanoa

Owen wrapped up second place in the Western Highlands Conference softball race on Friday, notching two wins over Polk County in Swannanoa.

The Warhorses (12-5, 10-2) handed Polk a 10-6 loss in a regularly scheduled game, then scored four runs in the top of the ninth to take a 12-8 win in the completion of a suspended game from last week at Polk.

The losses leave the Wolverines at 10-8 overall, 6-4 in WHC play. Polk County will finish third in the WHC race and will need an at-large bid to the state 2A playoffs.

Polk held a 6-2 lead after two innings in Friday’s game, but the Warhorses held the Wolverines without a run the rest of the way. Owen closed to within 6-4 before exploding for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take control of the game.

Hayley Kropp finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead Polk County, with Maranda Gosnell also going 2-for-4. Autumn Owen and Karli Wood each added a hit and RBI, with Hannah Emory, Ansley Lynch and Haley Fowler also adding hits.

The Wolverines host Hendersonville on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. to kick off the final week of the regular season.
