13-hit attack carries Polk past Mountain Heritage

Polk County opened a 7-0 lead Wednesday and went on to hand Mountain Heritage a 7-3 defeat in Western Highlands Conference softball action in Burnsville.

The Wolverines (9-5, 5-2) scored three runs in the top of the first and never trailed in the game. Mountain Heritage dropped to 5-11, 3-6 with the loss.

Polk County pounded out 13 hits in the game. Ansley Lynch finished 3-for-4 to lead the Wolverines, with Hayley Kropp going 2-for-5 with two RBI, Autumn Owen 2-for-4 with an RBI, Karli Wood 2-for-4 with an RBI and Morgan Stott 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Wolverines stole six bases, with Lynch recording three of those steals.

Ashley Scruggs pitched six innings to earn the win, allowing four hits and striking out three. Haley Fowler struck out two and allowed one hit in one inning of relief.

The Wolverines are at home Friday, facing Owen in a matchup of second-place teams in the WHC.
