Wolverines race to early lead, cruise past Patriots

Polk County closed the first quarter with a 12-1 run and pulled away for a 60-17 victory over Madison in Thursday’s Western Highlands Conference girls basketball matchup at Polk.

The Wolverines (17-3, 6-3 WHC) led 9-6 midway through the opening period before five different players scored during the decisive surge to build a 21-7 lead at the end of the quarter.

Polk County continued to dominate in the second half, holding Madison to just two field goals – both coming in the final minute of the respective quarters.

Bailey Staton led the Wolverines with 26 points. Honesty Jackson added nine, Charley Dusenbury and Sofie Abrahamsen each scored eight, Reeve Carroll finished with seven and Amiyah Waters had two.

Madison fell to 3-18 overall and 1-8 in conference play.

Polk County is scheduled to host Avery on Friday for another Western Highlands Conference game.
