Wolverines pick up big road win at Erwin, 9-8

Polk County earned Thursday its fourth straight win, holding off Erwin 9-8 in a non-conference baseball matchup in Leicester.

The Wolverines improved to 5-5 with the win, continuing a roll the team began after a loss to Madison two weeks ago.

“I think this is a big momentum game for us,” said Polk County head coach Ty Stott. “It’s not the end of the season if we lose, but it’s nice to keep this winning streak going.”

J.D. Edwards starred in the win for Polk County. Coming on in relief in the third inning, Edwards earned the win, allowing two runs, just one earned, in four and a third innings of work. Edwards was also 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Wolverine offense on a day when the wind howled so hard that Polk players often had a hard time hearing Stott while on the field.

“J.D. pitched absolutely unbelievable,” Stott said. “He was definitely the star of the game.”

Polk County took a 9-7 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Erwin scored once and had the tying runner on first, but Edwards caught the runner breaking toward second, where he was tagged out to end the game.

Polk County also turned double plays to end the fifth and sixth innings.

“I think this was a very big deal for a non-conference game,” Stott said. Erwin defeated Polk County 8-4 two weeks ago.

“All of us coaches are just tickled to deal that we pulled out a big road non-conference game.”

Wes Brady finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and Daniel Painter was 2-for-4 for the Wolverines, who return home Tuesday, hosting Owen in a key Western Highlands Conference game.
