Gavin Waldbillig dominated in a dual role Monday, tossing a five-inning no-hitter and belting a grand slam to lead Polk County Middle to a 13-1 victory over Flat Rock Middle in Blue Ridge Conference baseball action at Polk County Recreation Complex.

Waldbillig struck out six batters and walked five while allowing just one run in the first inning. At the plate, the Wolverine standout finished 2-for-2 with six RBI, including his third-inning grand slam that highlighted Polk County’s offensive explosion.

Polk County (2-7) broke the game open with a five-run second inning, capitalizing on control issues from Flat Rock (1-6) pitchers who struggled throughout, issuing eight walks and hitting four batters. Hudson Hyde and Matthew Foy drew bases-loaded walks before Brantley Hall singled to left field to drive in another run. Waldbillig followed with a two-run single to right field, extending the lead to 5-1.

The Wolverines continued their offensive surge in the third inning, with Foy delivering an RBI single before Waldbillig’s grand slam over the left-centerfield fence capped a six-run outburst. Polk County added two more runs in the fourth inning on run-scoring plays from McFalls and Hall to complete the scoring.

“Couldn’t be more proud of the boys,” said Polk Middle head coach Alston Rikard. “They swung the bat, played great defense and never got too comfortable.

“Gavin had an absolutely lights-out game on the mound and with that grand slam. Can’t ask a kid for any more.”

Hall finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Foy contributed a 1-for-3 performance with two RBI and two runs scored. Callaway Cameron crossed the plate three times.

The two teams will meet again Thursday in Flat Rock.
