It didn’t take long for Mark Mazzilli to know that he wanted to play baseball at Brevard College.
He’ll have that chance starting next season.
Mazzilli, a senior at Polk County, has verbally committed to sign a letter-of-intent with the Tornados. Mazzilli will be able to officially sign that letter on Nov. 12, the start of the early signing period for high school athletes.

Polk County’s starting center fielder last season, Mazzilli earned all-Western Highlands Conference honors while hitting .297 and posting an on-base percentage of .416. He made only two errors in 48 chances in the outfield.
“First off, I love the coach, I love the field, I love the campus, everything there was great,” Mazzilli said of his decision to commit to Brevard. “Plus they have an excellent program in my major (exercise science).”
The Tornadoes are coached by Matt McCay, a former assistant coach at North Carolina. Brevard finished 18-28 last season.
Mazzilli, who also has competed with Hendersonville’s Senior American Legion squad and the Mountain Expos travel squad, has been hoping to continue his career collegiately for several years.
“I first started thinking about playing college ball when I was in eighth grade,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to get better, to keep improving. All I want to do is keep playing baseball.”
