Bearcats get better of pitching duel, blank Wolverines

2 min read

Two Hendersonville pitchers teamed on a three-hitter Thursday, keeping Polk County in check en route to a 4-0 Western Highlands Conference win at Polk.

The Wolverines (6-7, 4-3) got a solid pitching effort from Morgan Groves, but Austin Redden and Noah Linhart were equal to the challenge, keeping the Wolverines from mounting a serious scoring threat throughout the game.

“Morgan, I just don’t know how you can ask him to pitch any better,” said Polk County head coach Ty Stott. “He probably had to get five extra outs. He had a lot of runners on early in a lot of different innings and didn’t give up any runs.

“Hendersonville is well coached and has had good ball players the last two or three years. They’ve got a lot of players back. We don’t want to just keep it close, but there’s no reason we can’t make it closer. If we don’t make some mistakes, we make it a 2-0 game and maybe they get a little tight when we get the tying run on base in the seventh.”

Hendersonville (9-1, 4-1) scored in its first at-bat on Michael Schmidt’s RBI single, then added to the lead in the third inning when Jessie Gossett hammered the first pitch of the inning to left-center for a solo home run. The Bearcats picked up another run in the third and one more in the seventh.

Daniel Painter, Dequan Gary and Tyler Campbell had the three hits for the Wolverines.

Hendersonville took a 13-3 win in the junior varsity game.
