Polk County ensured itself Thursday of no worse than a second-place finish in the Western Highlands Conference volleyball race, defeating Avery in straight sets in Newland.
The Wolverines earned a 25-13, 25-18, 25-14 win over the Vikings, improving their record to 13-5, 9-1. Mountain Heritage, currently in third place in the WHC, has four conference losses and thus cannot catch Polk County, who trails first-place Hendersonville by a game.
Avery dropped to 8-7 overall, 4-5 with the loss.
