Polk County Middle School opened its volleyball season in winning fashion on Wednesday, sweeping past Macon Middle in Blue Ridge Middle School Conference action at Polk.
The Wolverines posted a 25-12, 25-15 win, giving new head coach Matthew Russell his first win at the school.
“I love winning. I think this is great, especially with such a young team,” Russell said. “Starting the season off with a win means a lot to the girls. It’s more fun when you’re winning.”

Polk County controlled play for most of both games, though Macon made a brief run in the middle of the second set. Russell called a timeout to steady the Wolverines, and Polk pulled away to seal the match.
“If our girls put their serves in, we really gel and we really get into a rhythm,” Russell said. “We still have some work to do. With our communications, we want to get better. We want to get more serves in. But I definitely love the effort.
“You’ve got to be happy with a win to start the season. Our fifth quarter team looked great, our regular team looked great.”
Polk County is back at home on Wednesday, hosting Brevard Middle in the second of three straight home matches to open the season.
