Wolverines thump Avery to claim conference opener

Polk County opened Western Highlands Conference softball play Tuesday with a 12-0 rout of Avery in Newland.

Three Wolverines – Ansley Lynch, Alana Jergenson and Morgan Stott – each had three hits as Polk County (2-1, 1-0) built a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never let Avery threaten thereafter.

Anna McFadden opened the game with a home run, had two hits and two RBI and also pitched a complete game, allowing three hits while striking out 12.

Stott finished 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI and Jergenson was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Jaylin Jackson was 1-for-3 with three RBI, Jessie Emory singled and drove in a run and Amy Chupp also had a hit and RBI.

The Wolverines finished with 14 hits in the victory.

“We hit the ball well tonight,” said Polk County head coach Jamie Thompson. “Really proud of our effort. Anna did another great job on the mound.

“Lynch and Stott are both doing a great job leading with their play and attitude.”

Polk County will host Pisgah on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a game originally set for Thursday. It will be the Wolverines’ home opener.
