Polk County’s track and field squad has been named a finalist for male 2A/1A Olympic sports team of the year as part of the 54th WNC Sports Awards Banquet, set for May 17 in Asheville.
The annual event, which recognizes the top high school athletes and teams in Western North Carolina, will be held at the Omni Grove Park Inn. North Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams will also be inducted into the WNC Sports Hall of Fame as part of the festivities.
Polk County’s boys track squad placed third in this year’s state indoor track championships and brought home two state relay titles. The Wolverines are nominated for the award along with Carolina Day’s swim team, Franklin’s cross country team and Mitchell’s wrestling team.
