Waynesville Middle tallied in every inning Monday to notch a 12-1 victory over Polk County Middle in the season opener for both teams in Waynesville.
The Mountaineers, always one of the top teams in the Blue Ridge Conference, opened a 5-0 lead after the first inning, then added a run in the second and three in both the third and fourth to end the game by run rule.
Polk Middle, though, didn’t drop its debut without a battle. The Wolverines loaded the bases in the first inning, then pushed across their run in the third inning as Kimber Palmer singled to open the inning and later scored.
The Wolverines will return to the field on Monday, traveling to Brevard Middle for a 4:30 p.m. game.
