Polk Middle’s historic softball season came to an end Tuesday with a 16-4 loss to Macon Middle in the first round of the Blue Ridge Conference Tournament at the Polk County Recreation Complex.

The defeat closed the most successful season in program history for the Wolverines, who finished 9-4 and earned a second-place conference finish for the first time.

Macon (10-3) jumped ahead early and scored in every inning, ending the game after five innings via the run rule. The Panthers collected 17 hits in the victory.

Polk Middle received strong offensive performances despite the loss. Maddie Jolley belted a three-run home run, and Kayla Hayford went 2-for-2 with two runs and a triple. Kenzie Alm added a double, going 1-for-2, and Kaydence Cole finished 1-for-2.

The Wolverines will return the core of their roster next season, losing just two eighth graders in Alm and Kali Masters.

“Our girls’ ball team has officially concluded the most successful season in program history,” Polk Middle head coach Leanne Panter said. “Coach [Sarah] Fisher and I couldn’t be more impressed with this group. From the first day of practice to the final inning of the conference tournament, the progress was undeniable.”

The program’s growth this season was built on more than wins and losses.

“This group of athletes redefined what it means to be a teammate,” Panter said. “Their grit, their ‘never quit’ attitude, and their genuine love for the game were evident in every single inning. They didn’t just get better at ball, they grew as a unit. We couldn’t be prouder of the heart they showed on the field.”

The foundation laid this spring has the coaching staff optimistic about the future.

“The bar has been set high, and we are already counting down the days until next year,” Panter said. “With the core of this team returning, we aren’t starting from scratch next year. We are starting from a place of proven success.”
