Not even the darkness enveloping Polk County’s softball field Friday evening could darken the smiles on the faces of Polk County’s junior varsity softball squad.
The Wolverines rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, heady baserunning helping give Polk an 8-7 Western Highlands Conference win over visiting Mitchell.
Down 7-4 after four and a half innings, Polk (3-2) notched one run in the fifth to begin its comeback. Karli Wood then opened the sixth with a base hit, moved to second on a sacrifice by Brooke Love and scored when Mitchell misplayed Amber Miller’s infield grounder.

Hannah Emory followed with a single to shallow center to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third before Rileigh Price smacked a ground ball back to the Mitchell pitcher. As she threw to first, Miller broke for home and scored the tying run. The throw to the plate to try to catch Miller sailed wide, and Emory raced home with the winning run.
Courtney Moss earned the win for Polk County, which travels to Asheville on Monday for a 4 p.m. game.
