Wolverines close season with pair of victories

Polk County’s softball team closed its regular season with victories in two of its final three outings, defeating Hendersonville on Senior Day and splitting a doubleheader at North Henderson.


Polk County 12, Hendersonville 2

Polk County broke open a close game with four runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth to defeat Hendersonville in Western Highlands Conference play Wednesday on the Wolverines’ Senior Day.

Polk County scored once in the first when Aslyn Scruggs singled and later came home on a passed ball. Hendersonville tied the game 1-1 in the third, but the Wolverines regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Lucy Tessnair singled home courtesy runner AJ Jackson. Camdyn Israel-Garrett added an RBI single to make it 3-1.

Hendersonville cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth, but Polk County extended its lead to 7-2 in the fifth. Bella Lancaster scored on a passed ball, and Kinsley Lancaster drove in Tessnair with a single. Kendall Taylor followed with a two-run homer to left field to make it 7-2.

The Wolverines added five runs in the sixth to win by run rule. Scruggs scored on an error, Junie Mitchell singled home Jackson, Bella Lancaster scored on an error, Tessnair scored on a single by Israel-Garrett and Kinsley Lancaster scored on a steal of home.

Tory Coile earned the victory, pitching six innings and allowing four hits with six strikeouts.

Coile led Polk County’s offense, going 3-for-4 with a double. Israel-Garrett and Kinsley Lancaster each went 3-for-4, with Israel-Garrett driving in two runs. Taylor finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run. Tessnair went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a double.

Polk County 6, North Henderson 3

Polk County scored five runs in the first inning and held on for a 6-3 victory over North Henderson in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader.

The Wolverines jumped on North Henderson early, sending nine batters to the plate in the opening frame.

Scruggs singled and Coile followed with another single to start the rally. Mitchell doubled to score Scruggs, and Tessnair singled home two runs to make it 3-0. Kinsley Lancaster tripled to score Tessnair but was thrown out trying to score. Mary Marrow followed with an RBI single off Israel-Garrett’s double to give Polk a 5-0 lead.

North Henderson got on the board in the third when Amber Matlak scored on a wild pitch, but Polk County extended its lead to 6-1 in the fourth when Tessnair singled home Scruggs.

North Henderson loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth but managed just one run on a bases-loaded walk to Audrey Snowden. Tory Coile struck out Skylar Gorter, and Kyleigh Heath lined into a double play to end the threat.

Coile pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and three runs with one strikeout.

Scruggs went 2-for-2 with two runs scored for Polk County. Coile finished 3-for-3, Mitchell went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Tessnair went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

North Henderson 13, Polk County 6

North Henderson scored nine runs in the second inning and held off a late Polk County rally to win 13-6 in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader.

Polk County took a 1-0 lead in the first when Tessnair doubled to score Aubrey Bell, but North Henderson answered with nine runs in the second to take control.

The Knights sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, collecting five doubles. Gorter capped the inning with an RBI groundout to give North Henderson a 9-1 lead.

The Knights added three more runs in the third on doubles by Amber Matlak and Kennedy Drake to extend the lead to 12-1.

Polk County rallied with five runs in the fourth. Taylor Lancaster singled home Kinsley Lancaster, Scruggs singled home Israel-Garrett, and Coile doubled home two runs. Tessnair added a sacrifice fly to score Coile and cut the deficit to 12-6.

North Henderson added a run in the fifth on a single by Snowden that scored Spear.

Coile went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBs for Polk County. Mitchell finished 2-for-3 with a double, and Kinsley Lancaster and Israel-Garrett each went 2-for-3.

Polk County finished the season 4-18.
