Efficient Mountain Heritage runs past Polk County

4 min read

Mountain Heritage scored on its first six possessions Friday, tossing in a defensive score for good measure en route to a 51-8 victory over Polk County in Burnsville.

The Cougars (5-1, 2-0) celebrated Homecoming with a clinical offensive performance, especially in the first half, when Shrine Bowl selection Cason Jones led Mountain Heritage to a 37-0 halftime lead. Jones ran for 100 yards and a touchdown in the opening two quarters, finishing with 119 yards for the night, and caught two passes for 93 yards, one of those a 50-yard snare for a score as the clock expired at the end of the half.

Polk County (2-5, 0-3) began the night missing three injured starters from its offensive line – Lashi Miller, Chester Taylor and Jahkeem Lipscomb. Yet the Wolverines had some success moving the ball in the first half, twice moving inside the Mountain Heritage 20. Holding penalties, though, stymied both of those drives, neither of them ending in points.

The Wolverines also pushed into Mountain Heritage territory after the Cougars took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on an Ervine Rodriguez 3-yard scoring run. Polk responded with a steady drive, fueled by Brody Wilkins completions to Styler Blackwell and Nolan Simpson, to reach the Cougar 24 before the drive stalled. The Wolverines lined up for a Blake Anderson 48-yard field goal attempt, but Jones surged up the middle to block the kick.

Mountain Heritage answered with a Brayden Deyton 29-yard run to take a 16-0 advantage. Polk again followed with a drive deep into Cougar territory, with Loreynzo Sanchez breaking what would have been an 18-yard scamper to the Cougar 15. A holding penalty negated most of that run, and Wilkins’ 4th-and-9 pass from the 37 was intercepted on the first play of the second quarter.

Trailing 30-0 late in the first half, Polk put together another sustained drive, with a Wilkins 15-yard pass to Simpson and a face mask penalty giving the Wolverines first and goal at the 9. Another holding penalty on a Sanchez run pushed Polk back to the 19, and three straight incompletions returned the ball to the Cougars with 33 seconds remaining in the half.

Rodriguez ran for 13 yards and Jones rambled for 24 to quickly move the ball to midfield. Deyton then launched a long pass down the left sideline to Jones, who hauled it in just before crossing the end zone as time expired in the half. Connor Macias added the extra point to cap the half and trigger a running clock in the second half.

The Wolverines avoided the shutout with their final possession, driving 73 yards in four plays. Wilkins hit passes to Blackwell and Acer Eadus before Sanchez ripped off runs of 17 and seven yards, the latter into the end zone. Eadus snared the 2-point conversion for the final margin.

Sanchez finished with 90 yards on 18 carries, though the running clock meant he only had three second-half carries as Polk had just two possessions. Wilkins finished 10-of-17 for 141 yards as the Wolverines moved the ball effectively through the air, with Blackwell grabbing five passes for 57 yards.

Polk will complete its three-game conference road trip next week, traveling to Madison.
