Mountain Heritage keeps Polk at bay in conference victory

4 min read

Polk County found enough offense Friday to keep giving itself chances.

Mountain Heritage kept taking them away.

Each time the Wolverines threatened to cut into the Cougars’ advantage, Mountain Heritage responded with another scoring drive, eventually pulling away for a 47-24 Western Highlands Conference victory at G.M. Tennant Stadium.

Polk twice drove deep into Mountain Heritage territory without scoring in the first half, then later cut the deficit to 32-16 in the third quarter. But the Cougars answered that touchdown with one of their own and finished with 466 yards of offense, including 315 on the ground.

Mountain Heritage (4-2, 2-0) established that tone almost immediately.

After taking the opening kickoff, the Cougars needed just three plays to score, Brayden Deyton finding Jackson Banks for a 65-yard touchdown. Mountain Heritage then marched 51 yards on its next possession, with Ervine Rodriguez scoring from eight yards out and adding the 2-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.

Polk showed its first offensive spark on the next series. Brody Wilkins hit Styler Blackwell for 47 yards on the opening play, moving the Wolverines to the Mountain Heritage 30. But four straight incompletions ended the threat.

Mountain Heritage responded by going 70 yards for another touchdown, Deyton finding Foster Calloway for a 28-yard score that made it 20-0 late in the opening quarter.

Polk then put together one of its best possessions, a 14-play drive that began at its own 34 and stretched well into the second period.

Blackwell converted a fourth-and-5 with a 6-yard reception, then later gained 12 yards on the ground. A Mountain Heritage facemask penalty helped move the ball to the 13, but Polk eventually faced fourth-and-8 at the 11, where an incomplete pass ended the drive.

Mountain Heritage promptly went 89 yards the other way.

Banks began the march with a 21-yard run, Rodriguez added an 18-yard gain and Deyton eventually found Owen Medlin for a 43-yard touchdown and a 26-0 advantage.

Polk finally broke through before halftime.

Wilkins connected with Keyan Simpson for 46 yards to the Mountain Heritage 21, then hit Blackwell for a 21-yard touchdown. Zach McCraw ran in the 2-point conversion, cutting the margin to 26-8 with 37 seconds left in the half.

The Wolverines opened the second half by moving into Mountain Heritage territory again, Wilkins hitting Dre Thompson for 18 yards. But Jayden Jones intercepted Wilkins on the next play, and Mountain Heritage followed with a 66-yard scoring drive, Shooter Fox finishing it on an 18-yard run for a 32-8 lead.

Polk answered with perhaps its best drive of the night.

The Wolverines covered 68 yards in 14 plays, overcoming an 11-yard sack and converting twice on fourth down along the way. Wilkins found Simpson for 27 yards, Blackwell added a 13-yard run and Wilkins twice scrambled for fourth-down conversions.

Blackwell eventually scored from four yards out and added the 2-point run, trimming the deficit to 32-16 late in the third quarter.

Mountain Heritage again responded.

Rodriguez broke free for 29 yards on the ensuing possession, and Deyton opened the fourth quarter with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Medlin. Jones then intercepted Wilkins on Polk’s next snap, and Mountain Heritage turned the short field into another touchdown, Deyton scoring from eight yards out to make it 47-16.

Polk added one final score midway through the fourth.

Wilkins opened the drive with a 22-yard completion to Blackwell, then found him again on fourth-and-6 for a 46-yard touchdown. Blackwell added his second 2-point conversion of the night for the final margin.

Blackwell finished with nine catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns while rushing 11 times for 51 yards and another score. Wilkins completed 14-of-31 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions. Simpson added three receptions for 76 yards.

Rodriguez led Mountain Heritage with 164 yards on 21 carries. Deyton completed 5-of-7 passes for 151 yards and four touchdowns. Banks added 72 rushing yards and 69 receiving yards.

Polk County fell to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in Western Highlands Conference play. The Wolverines remain home Friday to face Madison.
