An extra 2-point conversion proved the margin of victory Thursday as Canton Middle handed Polk County Middle a 24-22 setback in Blue Ridge Conference football action in Canton.
The Bears spoiled the Wolverines’ season opener with their third straight win in the series by two points.
Canton recovered an onside kick to open the game and drove and scored for an early 8-0 lead. Polk Middle responded with its own scoring possession, with Hollis Williams reaching the end zone. The 2-point try failed, leaving Polk trailing 8-6.

The teams swapped turnovers before the Bears scored again to up the lead to 16-6. Back came Polk Middle, with Andy Serrano scoring and Riley Morgan adding the 2-point conversion to cut Canton’s lead to 16-14.
A bad snap on a fourth-down play gave Canton the ball inside the Polk 30 in the final minute, and the Bears scored again to take a 24-14 lead at the half.
Polk Middle had the only touchdown of the second half, with Williams scoring and Morgan adding the 2-point conversion. The Wolverines had a couple of other scoring chances but couldn’t convert those into points.
“I’m happy with how physical we played at times,” said Polk Middle head coach Ethan Edwards. “We just have to take care of the ball and eliminate some mistakes.”
Polk Middle will next be in action on Thursday, hosting Brevard Middle for a 5 p.m. game at Utz Field.
