Wolverine runners fare well at Montreat College meet

Polk County’s cross country teams enjoyed a solid day Saturday, each recording top-seven finishes at the 2016 Hyder McMahill Invitational at Montreat College.

The Wolverine boys unofficially placed sixth, led by Caleb Potter’s 10th-place finish with a time of 19:28.7. Chris Lawrence finished 28th in a time of 20:36.7.

“It was an excellent day and almost the entire team had a PR (personal record),” said Polk County head coach Alan Peoples.

Polk County’s India Godlock continued her excellent early-season showings with a second-place finish to lead the Wolverines to a seventh-place performance.

Godlock finished the 5K course in 21:27.5, trailing only Asheville Christian Academy’s Julia Williams, who won the race in 20:48.2.

Polk County’s Sadie Allen posted a time of 25:48.1 to place 32nd. Other Wolverines competing included:

Selena Chavez, 26:24.4; Nicole Mott, 30:12.8; Drew Bailey, 30:22.4; Abigail Amato, 33:07.9; Madison Poe, 35:50.6.

Both teams are scheduled to compete Friday in the Friday Night Lights event at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville. The night race is held on the same course as the state cross country championships.
