Polk runners open season at Tryon relay event

Polk County’s top boys relay opened the 2026 cross country season with a sixth-place finish Friday at the Tryon Under The Lights Relays at Tryon International.

Polk’s A entry completed the boys varsity 2x2x2000-meter event in 29:41.11. The Wolverines posted splits of 6:48.02, 7:35.00, 7:12.58 and 8:05.51.

Shelby’s C relay won the race in 28:21.83, with Spartanburg D taking second in 28:35.81 and Byrnes F finishing third in 28:51.08.

Polk also had six other entries in the boys varsity race. The C relay placed 16th in 31:29.69, with the B relay 27th in 34:02.31. Polk D finished 31st in 36:40.80, followed by F in 32nd at 38:24.65, G in 36th at 38:55.98 and E in 39th at 41:20.69.

In the girls varsity race, Polk’s H relay finished 27th in 40:56.91. Mauldin D won the event in 31:01.02, with Landrum taking the next two spots in 31:34.91 and 31:50.13.

Polk also competed in the open 2×2000-meter race, with its I entry placing 11th in 20:59.97.

The Wolverines are next scheduled to compete Aug. 27 at the Chase 2 Mile Invite/Hoka Postal Nationals.
