Polk boys lose overtime heartbreaker, Wolverine girls fall at Madison

Polk County’s boys basketball squad opened Western Highlands Conference play Friday with a tough 77-76 overtime loss at Madison.

The Wolverines (4-3, 0-1) build a 14-point lead entering the fourth quarter before the Patriots rallied, with Tyler McDevitt hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

McDevitt then hit another 3-pointer with three seconds left to win the game.

“We gave them a lot of second shot opportunities and missed a lot of free throws down the stretch,” said Polk County head coach Josh McEntire. “We have to learn from this and keep trying to get better.”

Jamal Tanner scored 20 points to lead Polk, who also got 16 from Anthony Carson, 14 from Jaron Bontrager and 11 from Saquan Miller. Daniel Nash scored 21 and McDevitt 20 to lead Madison.

The Wolverines travel to North Buncombe on Tuesday before closing out their pre-holiday schedule on Thursday, hosting Mountain Heritage in WHC play.

Wolverine girls fall

Baylea Loven scored 18 points and Lexi Ammons added 16 as Madison improved to 7-1 with a 57-35 victory.

Sarah Phipps scored nine points to lead Polk County, which dropped to 5-2, 0-1 in conference play and saw its three-game winning streak snapped.
