Avery’s boys and girls basketball squads maintained their unbeaten Western Highlands Conference records Tuesday with wins over Polk County in WHC action in Newland.
The Avery girls posted a 49-39 win over Polk County. Avery (6-6, 3-0) built a 28-21 halftime lead and held on to drop Polk County to 7-4 overall, 1-3 in WHC play.
Hayley Kropp scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Polk County, which also got eight points and five assists from Kara Overholt. Autumn Owen had three points, Ashley Kropp had two and Savannah Ross added one.

The Avery boys (5-8, 3-0) notched a 77-38 win over Polk County (1-10, 1-3). The Wolverines trailed by seven midway through the second period when leading scorer Jamal Wheeler picked up his third foul. Avery responded with an 18-0 run to take command of the game and build a 25-point halftime lead.
Polk County is back in action on Wednesday, hosting A.C. Reynolds in non-conference action.
