Edwards’ heroics lift Polk County JV boys to thrilling win

1 min read

Wilson Edwards made three key plays in the final seconds Monday, including the game-winning free throw, to lift Polk County’s junior varsity boys to a 34-33 win over North Henderson.

The Knights rallied from a 23-14 halftime deficit to tie the score in the fourth quarter and had possession of the ball in the waning seconds. But an entry pass into the lane was knocked away, and Edwards scooped up the loose ball and raced downcourt, drawing a foul.

Edwards hit one free throw, then missed the second, but outhustled four North Henderson players to get the rebound and draw another foul. Edwards missed both free throws, and North Henderson called a timeout with 2.5 seconds remaining.

But Edwards stole the inbounds pass to preserve the win.

“I’m very, very proud of them,” said Polk County JV coach Jon Hampton.

Brett Phipps had 11 points and Edwards had eight to lead Polk County.
