Wolverine golfers set for Western Highlands tourney

The Polk County boys golf team geared up for this week’s Western Highlands Conference tournament with a pair of matches last week, with senior Will Ballard earning medalist honors at both.

The WHC tourney begins today at Mountain Glen Golf Club in Newland. The home course for Avery County should helpd give the Vikings a good start to the event.

The tourney is slated to conclude Tuesday at Hendersonville Country Club, though the forecast for Tuesday calls for heavy rain to arrive in the area.

Hendersonville, Mitchell and Polk County will comprise the likely challengers to Avery for the conference title. At the individual level, Ballard, Avery’s Daniel Childress and Chance Watson and Hendersonville’s Alex Yarborough are among the favorites.
