Polk golfers making regional run at WHC tourney

Polk County positioned itself to qualify two, possibly three, individual golfers for the 2A West Regional during Monday’s opening round of the Western Highlands Conference tournament at Black Mountain Golf Course.

The Wolverines finished the first day in fifth place and will likely stay that way after Tuesday’s second round at Mountain Air Country Club. But the story for the Wolverines will be the quest to qualify individuals for next week’s regional tourney.

The top two 2A teams in the conference will automatically advance to the regional, and those look to be Hendersonville and Owen. The top four individuals not from the qualifying schools also advance.

Dillion Overholt fired an 88 Monday, just 12 shots off the pace set by Hendersonville’s Zack Stevens, and is in the lead spot for the regional qualifying. Polk County’s Gabe O’Brien (98) and Josh Chupp (100) currently hold the next three spots, with two Mountain Heritage golfers at 103.
