Polk County’s boys golf team opened a 21-shot lead Monday in the first round of the Western Highlands Conference tournament.

Competing at Grassy Creek Golf and Country Club in Spruce Pine, the Wolverines posted a team total of 331, topping Avery’s 352 and Mitchell’s 357. None of the WHC’s 2A schools fielded a full team for the event.

Polk County has not won a boys golf conference championship since 2008.

Avery Harden had an eagle to highlight his round of 77 and finished the day in second place, one shot behind Avery’s Levi Andrews.

Carson Emory posted an 80, with Reilly Yoder notching an 84 and Evan Jones finishing with a 90. Braxton Edwards added a 102.

Mitchell’s Connor Warren had a 78 to sit in third place after the first round.

The teams will move Tuesday to Meadowbrook Golf Course to complete the tourney.
