Polk County’s junior varsity erupted for five runs in the first inning Thursday en route to an 8-2 win over Mitchell at The Bottoms.
The Wolverines (2-1) raced to the 5-0 lead without the benefit of a hit in claiming their home opener. There were three hit batsmen, three walks and two errors in the frame to help Polk build its 5-0 lead.
Polk added a run in the second, then two more in the fourth as Jonathan Edwards doubled to drive in Coble Cameron and later scored on a balk.
The Wolverines had just two hits, though by Edwards and Jackson Beiler, as Mitchell pitchers walked five and hit four and the Mountaineers committed four errors.
Cameron earned the win, hurling three and two-thirds innings. He stuck out seven and allowed two hits and two runs. Edwards pitched the rest of the way and struck out three, not allowing a hit.
Polk County is slated to host Mountain Heritage on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
