Polk JVs blast Owen to earn first win of season

Coble Cameron’s hitting and pitching helped propel Polk County’s junior varsity to a 9-3 win Thursday over Owen in a Western Highlands Conference meeting in Swannanoa.

Cameron finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and held Owen to two hits and two runs in five innings. Shane Parris pitched the sixth to close out the game.

Polk (1-1, 1-0) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Parris and Bryson Edwards singled and Jonathan Edwards drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Another walk to Jackson Beiler drove in one run, with Bryson Edwards then scoring on a passed ball.

Jonathan Edwars then scored on a Chan Barber single for the 3-0 lead.

Parris walked and later scored on a passed ball in the second before Cameron’s RBI single made it 5-1. The Wolverines then added two runs in the third as Kaleb Johnson walked, Parris singled and Cameron drilled a two-run double to center.

Owen scored a run in the bottom of the third, but Polk added a run in the top of the fourth as Parris was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs. The Wolverines closed the scoring in the fifth as Cameron singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball.

Parris finished 2-for-3 and scored three runs, with Bryson Edwards going 2-for-5 and Barber finishing 2-for-4.

The Wolverines are slated to return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Avery.
