Polk County jumped out to an 11-3 lead after three innings Tuesday and went on to post a 12-7 win over Avery in a Western Highlands Conference baseball battle in Newland.
The Wolverines (4-11, 2-5) scored five runs in the top of the first, then added six more in the third in dropping Avery to 2-13 overall, 0-9 in WHC play.
Holden Owens finished 2-for-3 and was also the winning pitcher, tossing three innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out four.

Tyler Harris had two doubles and was 2-for-3, Daniel Painter was 2-for-3 with a double and Zach Foy was 2-for-2 for the Wolverines.
Moved up from the junior varsity, Clark Phipps came on in relief of Owens in the fourth inning and pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs. Zach Foy And Avery Edwards each pitched two-thirds of an inning to close out the game.
The Wolverines are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Mountain Heritage for another WHC game.
