First-place Mountaineers check Polk baseball, 5-2

Mitchell built a 5-0 lead after four innings Wednesday and held on for a 5-2 win over Polk County in a Western Highlands Conference game in Ledger.

The Mountaineers (8-5, 7-2) entered off an emotional win Tuesday over Hendersonville, a victory that moved Mitchell into a tie for first place in the WHC. But the Mountaineers scored two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to avoid a letdown.

Thanks in part to Mark Mazzilli’s home run, Polk County (7-9, 5-5) scored once in both the fifth and sixth innings, but could get no closer.

Tyler Harris added two hits for Polk County, who is back on action on Tuesday, traveling to Chase for a non-conference game.
