Baseball roundup: Polk JVs win, varsity falls at Madison

Polk County’s junior varsity rode a strong offensive performance and the pitching of Clark Phipps to a 10-3 win Friday at Madison.

The Wolverines pounded out nine hits in improving to 2-3 overall, 1-0 in Western Highlands Conference games.

Phipps pitched 4 1/3 innings, striking out five and allowing three hits and three runs.

Bryson Ridings finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead Polk’s offense. Wilson Edwards finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two steals and Phipps was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

In varsity action, Madison scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on for a 5-3 win in the WHC opener for both teams.

The Patriots (2-2, 1-0) extended the lead to 5-0 before Polk County (1-5, 0-1) scored once in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.

Sedric Pickett was 1-for-2 and Cory Skipper 1-for-1 with a steal to lead Polk’s attack, which finished with three hits against Madison starter Jared Rogers.

Both Polk County teams are back in action Tuesday, hosting Mountain Heritage with junior varsity action beginning at 4 p.m.
