A difficult first inning proved too much to overcome Tuesday as Polk County’s junior varsity baseball team dropped a 17-1 decision to R-S Central in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference action in Rutherfordton.

The Hilltoppers exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning, building a lead that they would maintain throughout the shortened contest. R-S Central added five more runs in the second inning to account for their final total.

Polk County (0-2) opened the game with its lone run. Matt Jarrett reached on an error after laying down a bunt, then advanced to second and third on wild pitches before scoring on Simms Harris’ groundout.

Jarrett provided one of just two hits for the Wolverines, doubling in his second at-bat to finish 1-for-2. Jonathan Painter had the other Polk County hit, also going 1-for-2 at the plate.

Polk County will have a quick opportunity for redemption as the Wolverines host R-S Central on Friday at 4 p.m. at The Bottoms.
