Polk County’s wrestling squad narrowly missed having a pair of wrestlers advance to state tournament action during Sunday’s 2A Western Regional tournament at Owen High School.

Freshman Chase Emory and junior Damion Cantrell each fell one win shy of a berth in next week’s state 2A tourney in Greensboro. Both reached the consolation semifinals, Emory at 132 pounds and Cantrell at 170 pounds.

Anthony Marino and Dustin Calvert were eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals.

Polk County will begin what could be a very busy week of basketball with its final regular season games Monday night at Owen.

The oft-rescheduled trip to Owen will include only varsity games, with girls beginning at 5 p.m.

The Polk County and Owen girls will then meet again in the opening round of the Western Highlands Conference tournament. It also appears possible that the Wolverine boys could face Owen in their opening tournament game, depending on Monday’s result.

Scheduling for the delayed WHC tournament is expected to be finalized Monday morning.
