Polk County built a 2-0 lead Wednesday and held on to hand Mountain Heritage a 2-1 loss in a Western Highlands Conference boys soccer match held at Polk County Middle School.
Jack Derkach scored in the first half to give the Wolverines (7-8-1, 5-2) a 1-0 lead. A blocked shot rebounded directly to Derkach, who was positioned five yards in front of the goal and drilled in the shot to give Polk a 1-0 lead.
Isaias Akers added to the lead early in the second half, dribbling down the left side of the field, cutting to the goal and beating the Mountain Heritage goalkeeper.

The Cougars (2-8, 2-6) added a late goal for the final margin.
Polk County is back in action on Saturday, traveling to Highlands for a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
POLK COUNTY VOLLEYBALL: Undefeated West Henderson pushed past Polk County on Wednesday to take a straight-set win in a non-conference volleyball match at Polk.
The Falcons (19-0) took a 25-20, 25-20, 25-17 victory. Polk County dropped to 14-5 overall with the loss.
Kendall Hall had 14 digs, with Lauren Ketwitz notching 11 assists and 10 digs and Georgia Garrett recording six assists, 13 digs and three aces. Reagan Waddell had 11 kills and 16 digs and Addie Lynch had five kills and 15 digs.
Polk County travels to East Henderson on Monday for another non-conference match.
POLK MIDDLE VOLLEYBALL: The Wolverines closed their regular season with a key 25-19, 25-11 win at Flat Rock.
With the win, Polk Middle (9-3) clinched the No. 2 seed in the West Division of the Blue Ridge Middle School Conference and earned a first-round home playoff game in the league’s postseason tournament, which begins Monday. Polk County will host Bethel Middle at 4:30 p.m.
“We were a couple of players short for the game due to illness and other issues but the remaining girls stepped up,” said Polk Middle head coach Matthew Russell.
POLK COUNTY JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL: Mitchell eked out a 24-20 victory over the Wolverines in a Western Highlands Conference clash at G.M. Tennant Stadium.
The loss dropped Polk County to 3-4. The Wolverines will travel to Avery next Thursday for another WHC meeting.
POLK MIDDLE BOYS SOCCER: Flat Rock handed Polk County Middle a 10-0 loss in the Wolverines’ final regular-season game.
With a 2-8-1 record, the Wolverines earned the eighth seed in the Blue Ridge Middle School Conference and will travel back to Flat Rock on Monday for a first-round playoff game.
