Thursday roundup: PCHS soccer falls, volleyballers top Avery

Shelby exploded for three goals midway through the first half and went on to take a 5-2 win over Polk County in nonconference boys soccer action Thursday night at Polk Middle School.

The Golden Lions ended Polk’s two-game winning streak with an offensive flurry, Tyler Cowan scoring twice and Ben Gold once to give Shelby a 3-0 lead. Polk (4-9) soon responded with a textbook goal of its own, Austin Wolfe racing down the left wing and crossing a pass to Wil Rimer, who headed the ball into the net at the 19:11 mark.

Shelby kept up the offensive pressure, scoring twice more. But a gritty Polk team also continued to look for goals and were rewarded when Alex Miller tallied at the 13:16 mark to end the scoring.
