Bryce Jergenson’s sizzling 400-meter run highlighted Polk County’s efforts at Saturday’s Odell Williams Track Invitational at East Burke High School.
Jergenson completed the 400 meters in 50.68, narrowly missing the school record of 50.06 set in 2012 by Andy Conner. The time is the second fastest in the event for any 2A runner this spring.
Competing against a field of large schools from throughout the western half of the state, Polk County’s boys tied R-S Central for sixth in the 21-team field, with the Wolverine girls placing sixth in a 19-team competition.
Polk’s Olivia Overholt also was victorious in the 400 meters, winning the girls race with a time of 1:00.49. Braxton Edwards, meanwhile, won the boys 800 meters with a time of 2:02.59.
The Wolverines’ 4×400-meter relay team of Karsyn Huskey, Kinsley Huskey, Overholt and Lindsey Jenkins won the race with a time of 4:18.49. The boys 4×400 team placed third in 3:44.99.
Polk had a handful of other athletes with top-five efforts:
- Girls 4×800-meter relay. 3rd in 10:24.11
- Jenkins, fifth in the 800 at 2:29.90
- Kayla Kitchen, fourth in the 3200 meters at 16:22.31
- Steven Chupp, fourth in the triple jump at 38-1 1/2.
- Avia Cunningham, fifth in the shot put at 27-3 1/2 and fourth in the discus at 83-4.
Polk County will take part Wednesday in the Christ School #1 meet at Christ School in Arden. That at present is the Wolverines’ final regular-season meet before hosting the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference Championships on May 4.
