Polk County Middle’s track team delivered a successful season debut Tuesday at East Henderson, with several athletes qualifying for the Blue Ridge Conference meet.
Avia Cunningham led the Wolverines with a throw of 25-6 in the shot put to take first place in the event.
“Avia Cunningham was very patient today, and she was confident in her throws,” said Polk Middle coach Markece Cunningham. “She didn’t throw a PR (personal record) today, so I know her best throw has not been produced just yet.
“We also have two newcomer boy throwers, Christopher Wilmoth and Hayden Toney, who just lack one foot to qualify for conference at the first meet ever. We have a great season ahead of us.”
On the track side, sixth grader DeAndre Twitty won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.21.
“We have a lot of raw talent that we look forward to refining and seeing how that plays out in the season,” said coach Katie Elliott, who is coaching runners along with Theresa Thompson.
“On the other hand, we also have a lot of hard workers as that with determination will excel as well.”
Polk Middle is slated to return to East Henderson next Tuesday to again compete against a Blue Ridge Conference field.
